Global Art – Religion

What is religion? The oxford dictionary defines it as “the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods”. A religion is a system of human thought which usually includes a set of narratives, symbols, beliefs and practices that give meaning to the practitioner’s experiences of life through reference to a higher power, deity or deities, or ultimate truth.

There are many religions among the world today from Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Baha’i Faith, Hinduism, Buddhism and countless more. Why are there so many religions? What is the purpose of religion? Why do people believe in a higher power? Are all religion good? Are there religions that are immoral? These are all questions that come up when the topic of religion is brought up.

Andreas Gursky (1955) is a German visual artist known for his enormous architecture and landscape coloured photographs, often employing a high point of view. He is represented by the Matthew Marks Gallery in New York and by Spruth Magers Berlin London in Europe.

Allan Sekula is an American artist, writer, and critic based at the California Institute of Arts. His principal medium is photography, which he employs to create exhibitions, books, and films.

For this module we were asked to use machines to create our work. We used work that we had done before combined with images/pictures from magazines etc and using the lightbox and overhead projector we made our work.

After a game on Sunday, I grabbed Justin one of the players and asked him a few questions about football.

Why do you play football?
Well first of all it keeps me fit, and not only that but you have fun playing and also socializing with other players.

How did you start playing?
Haha, I use to play basketball before I started playing but my friends from school were football fanatics so I decided to try it, and now I just love it.

What team do you follow? Why?
I’m a Chelsea man all the way, well they were the first team I saw playing on t.v and from then on I’ve just admired their style of playing.

Why do you think football is considered the most popular sport in the world?
Simple, it dosent matter what size or skill level you are, pretty much anyone can put foot to ball.

Do you think football and art are related?
Mmm haha, tricky question. I’ve always thought of it as a sport, but thinking about it I guess football could be art in a way.

I found there to be quite a number of movies that are football related

One of them being The Damned United: The Damned United is a 2009 British sports drama film directed by Tom Hooper and adapted by Peter Morgan from David Peace’s bestselling novel “The Damed Utd”, a largely fictional book based on the author’s interpretation of Brain Clough’s tenure as manager of Leeds United.

I also tried to search online for artworks relating to football and vise versa, I ended up with some interesting works.

This is the official Logo for the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa.

Museum Visit

The museum visit was very interesting, and although there was a wide range of different items on show it was hard to find stuff relating to football or even sports in general.

Organised Play:

Between the turn of the century to the 1950′s school sports moved from dumb bells, indian clubs, cane hoops and jump ropes to the many team sports played today.

Spheres Lined Up:

Very interesting arrangment of different sizes of the sphere.

Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players using a spherical ball. Association football is the most popular football variant worldwide, and is widely considered to be the most popular sport in the world.

The game is played on a rectangular grass or artificial turf grass, with a goal in the centre of each of the short ends. The object of the game is to score by driving the ball into the opposing goal. In general play, the goalkeepers are the only players allowed to use their hands or arms to propel the ball; the rest of the team usually use their feet to kick the ball into position, occasionally using their torso or head to intercept a ball in midair. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins. If the score is tied at the end of the game, either a draw is declared or the game goes into extra time and/or a penalty shootout, depending on the format of the competition.

The modern game was codified in England following the formation of The Football Association, whose 1863 Laws of the game created the foundations for the way the sport is played today. Football is governed internationally by the GameFédération Internationale de Football Associatio (International Federation of Association Football), commonly known by the acronym FIFA. The most prestigious international football competition is the FIFA World Cup, held every four years. This event, the most widely viewed in the world, boasts an audience twice that of the Summer Olympic Games.

Photocopy

This was a very interesting module, never knew that photocopying things could have such an impact on making or changing how the original looked. We were asked to take a work from our visual diary and rework it by collaging and mixing other images from magazines newpapers etc.

Here’s a piece of work done by Bruce Conner entitled “BOMBHEAD”, it was scanned using the original negatives of a portrait of Bruce Conner by Edmund Shea and an atomic bomb photo from the National Archives, Library of Congress. It was digitally edited by Bruce Conner and Donald Farnsworth at Magnolia Editions in Oakland, California. The printing was done on an Epson 9600 piezo printer using gray and black pigmented ink. Bruce Conner accidently hand painted the drop of blood on the atomic symbol on the tie with acrylic paint.
